Year 4 have been getting on really well with their Roman Chariots and on Friday of last week, they made the barrier for their chariot and added some Roman decoration to it. Although the barrier looks easy to make, the children had to make sure they were following the instructions very carefully so that they didn’t miss out any crucial steps! Take a look at some of their creations …

Year 4 have begun learning about the Romans and Celts as their topic for this half term and this afternoon they began making their Roman Chariots during DT. Having looked closely at some existing chariots last week as well as designing their own chariot, their job this week was to make the frame of their chariot. Using a 60cm piece of wood, the children had to measure and saw it into 4 pieces measuring 20cm and 10cm, then glue these pieces together to make a square base. Once completed, the children used cardboard triangles on each join to hold it in place.

On Thursday I accompanied 20 year 5 children to Swanmore College where they took part in the Primary Engineering Project. The project is run by the college for its local feeder primary schools; 4 of which are taking part this year. The children worked in teams of 4 to design and make their own race car! They had to build everything from scratch, including the chassis and all the electronics to make the car move both forwards and backwards. The really exciting parts were making the body of the car on a special machine to form the plastic into the correct shape. They also designed and made their own stickers to decorate and personalise their cars. The whole afternoon was finished off with a series of races. The children all had a fantastic afternoon and have come back to school with their cars, which will be shared in assembly this Friday. One lucky team will also be taken through to the final where they will compete against all the other schools to hopfully be crownded winner. I have yet to decide who this lucky team will be…!

Today, our school hall turned into a sandwich making factory as both Maple and Jackalberry Class’ ended their DT unit by making their healthy sandwich snacks. The children had really enjoyed tasting the different breads and fillings over the past few weeks, learning about the different food groups and how we must eat a balance of all of these to stay healthy. After designing their sandwich and packaging last week, we spent the morning making! The children even included a list of ingredients and a description of their sandwich to help the customer choose carefully. They all looked very tasty and I am sure the children are going to enjoy eating them this evening!

This half term, Year 3 have been reading The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and have based a lot of our work around the story. In DT we have been designing and making our own Iron Man models, we have learnt about materials through designing clothes for the Iron Man and in Literacy we have been writing formal letters of complaint about the Iron Man’s behaviour and informal letters from Hogarth to the Iron Man. We have had a brilliant time and love the story! Now we are looking forward to finishing our Iron Man models – watch this space for photos of our finished products!

Year 4 have begun their new DT topic for this half term which is to design and make a healthy sandwich to be sold at the interval of a theatre show. To help with this process, the children have sampled a variety of different sandwich fillings, thinking about the packaging, appearance and taste. They have also tasted a variety of breads too as well as spreads to help them decide what they will use in their final sandwich. The children have enjoyed the taste testing very much!

On Wednesday 13th July, Mrs Phillips had the pleasure of accompanying a group of four year five children who show talent in Design and Technology to Swanmore College of Technology. Sam, Jamie, Matthew and Ethan had visited the college on a previous occasion to build a battery controlled car with other year five children from our school and their car had been voted the must successful.
The purpose of this visit was to take our winning car against other schools. ‘Shark Bait’ performed extremely well and the boys did us proud! There were five categories; appearance, team work, flat ground race, hill clime and bump race. Despite winning two categories and clearly being the fastest and best performing car, we narrowly missed first place and came close second.
The boys represented Bishop’s Waltham Junior school very well and demonstrated that we truly believe in and abide by our core school values- well done boys!

As part of their DT work this term, children in Year Five have designed and made their own hats. They had to come up with both their design, and the method they wished to use to assemble their finished product. Here are some of the ideas they came up with.
