For the summer, BWJS are signed up to Quadblogging. Quadblogging is a way of linking one school blog to another three around the world. Over the course of the process, each school blog is visited by people from the other three. During our visits, we can find out what is going on in other classes around the world and add our own comments.
In our quad, we are joined by St Monica’s Primary School (Wodonga, Australia), Lingwood Primary School (UK), and Vardon School (New Zealand).
This week, the focus blog is Mr Slater’s Year 5 class at Lingwood Primary School! Please visit them if you can, find out what they’ve been doing, and leave them a comment.

Year 4 have been getting on really well with their Roman Chariots and on Friday of last week, they made the barrier for their chariot and added some Roman decoration to it. Although the barrier looks easy to make, the children had to make sure they were following the instructions very carefully so that they didn’t miss out any crucial steps! Take a look at some of their creations …

On Friday last week, BWJS Bloggers launched again for the summer term.
Last year, children at BWJS Bloggers posted articles to the main school blog. This year, children are working on their own class blogs which you can find by using the links at the side of the screen. These class blogs will update through the summer term, and the children writing them will become a team of blogging experts who can spread their knowledge through the school next year.

On Thursday afternoon this week, the Year 5 school teaching team ran a maths workshop for parents and children. The workshop was well-attended, with a number of parents and their children taking part. Mrs. Peach and Mr. Senior explained the methods we use for addition and subtraction and the parents and children had an opportunity to practice some of the methods together too. The emphasis was on the children having a full understanding of what they are doing and only moving on to the next step when they are ready.
Thank you to all the parents who attended; the feedback was excellent.
A special thank you to all of the Year 6 pupils who helped out with the creche. Your support was very much appreciated!

Year 4 have begun learning about the Romans and Celts as their topic for this half term and this afternoon they began making their Roman Chariots during DT. Having looked closely at some existing chariots last week as well as designing their own chariot, their job this week was to make the frame of their chariot. Using a 60cm piece of wood, the children had to measure and saw it into 4 pieces measuring 20cm and 10cm, then glue these pieces together to make a square base. Once completed, the children used cardboard triangles on each join to hold it in place.

This evening the lower school teaching team ran a maths workshop for parents and children about multiplication and division. The workshop was well-attended with 22 parents and their children taking part. Mrs Zillwood and Mrs Rye explained the methods we use for multiplication and division and the parents and children had an opportunity to practise some of the methods together too. The emphasis was on the children having a full understanding of what they are doing and only moving on to the next step when they are ready.
Thank you to all the parents who attended; the feedback was excellent:
“Great way to understand how to help. Thank you.”
“Extremely useful – makes sense.”
“Good to see how to explain things better.”
“Great! Really helpful – I feel much more confident now! It was great to work with my child. Thank you.”
“Thank you! So helpful and great to know how the foundations and steps children need to take in maths. Fabulous. Really appreciate it.”
The Year 5 team will be holding a maths workshop about addition and subtraction on 10th May. Please see the office if you would like to attend. If you were not able to attend the Lower School workshop, the handouts are attached below and will also be avaialble on the website in the curriculum area.

On Wednesday this week, I took three Year Five children to Winchester to take part in a Kidsmeet. At a kidsmeet, teachers and children from a number of schools tour a venue watching short presentations about new ideas. We went along to talk about the recent work we’ve done using Google SketchUp. The children presented four different times, and spent lots of extra time talking to people from ther schools about how SketchUp works, and demonstrating their skills to an audience. I was very proud of the way they represented the school – well done to all three of them!
