Today was the last session for Let’s Go Exploring, so we decided to go exploring somewhere new in Bishop’s Waltham. Armed with litter pickers and gloves, we headed to the railway cutting.
The children picked up lots of litter as we walked through to the High Street.
We stopped off at Stainers and bought a little picnic treat of a flapjack and a drink each. We enjoyed this sitting in the peace and quiet on an old wooden bench surrounded by nature. Many of the children hadn’t explored this area before so it opened their eyes to the open space surrounding their town.
Litter picking resumed after the re-fuelling and we soon arrived back at the school with half a black sack full of rubbish.
Next year I will be running a club called ‘Eco Warriors’ so if you care about the environment and want to join, make sure you sign up ASAP at the start of next year.

Olympic season will soon be upon us and amongst us here at BWJS we have a group of young Olympic hopefuls that may well be entering sailing events in the future!
A few weeks ago at Let’s Go Exploring club we collected some twigs and branches from the Moors. Two weeks ago, after some research on the net, the group worked as a team to transform these into a raft complete with abandoned water bottles to aid flotation. This week, the children cleverly folded paper to make origami boats.
Today, the rain just about cleared up in time for us to take the raft and boats back down to the Moors to see if they were ‘sailable’. All the watercrafts proved river worthy and sailed very well… until one or two of the paper boats got a bit waterlogged on their third go!
The afternoon finished with a race, where Chloe and Skye’s red boats were declared joint winners and Sam’s blue boat came in second.
Thanks to Mr Wallace who accompanied us on this outing. Great fun was had by all!

Mrs Milne’s ‘Let’s Go Exploring’ Club started today. This club’s members have been personally invited with the aim to further their curiosity about the outdoors and provide them with memorable and fun ‘discovery’ experiences in the locality.
Today, we explored the school grounds, finding mini-beasts and examining them under magnifying glasses. Amongst the dry-stone walling and along the Nature Trail we found:
- Woodlice (brown and black)
- Ants
- Ladybirds
- Shield beetles
- Earthworms
- Snails
Next, we headed to the back of the field behind the orchard to build mini-dens! Using sticks, matted sheets of earth, leaves, grass and flowers, the teams naturally spilt into boys vs girls as Mr Wallace was kind enough to stay and join in with the club’s activities today. The girl’s den was clearly the winner as it was sturdy and well-insulated. The boys had better get practising in their free time, as they need to win when we make the real things after half term!
