Monday 18th March 2019 – Hampshire Schools Swimming Championships

The Hampshire round of the English Primary Schools Swimming Championships was held at Hart Leisure Centre in Fleet on Friday 15th March.

Teams from all over Hampshire competed to qualify for the S.E of England Regional finals at Guildford Spectrum in May.

There were no individual events, just freestyle and medley relays at this event and eight teams from our upper school swim squad were entered by Mrs Cooper to represent BWJS.

The standard of swimming at this County event was extremely high and every move was watched by qualified judges to make sure no ASA rules were broken. The electronic scoreboard flashed up the times and place order within seconds of the races finishing.

After the warm up sessions and a chance to test out the starting blocks, our teams waited nervously for the event too start. Dives, take-overs and strokes all had to be to ASA rules otherwise teams would be disqualified and only the fastest times would get them through to the regional finals. What a responsibility!

All our teams had superb swims with no disqualifications and although our B teams did not quite get into the medal places, they can be very proud of their performances. The boys’ medley A team led from the starting back stroke length and held on throughout the breast stoke, butterfly and front crawl to take 1st place and the gold medal. The boys’ freestyle A team were 3rd and both the girls medley and freestyle A teams took 3rd place which meant a good haul of medals for our team.

We now have to wait to find out if our times were good enough to qualify for the regional finals compared with the times for each event from teams in Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex and Berkshire as only the top sixteen times will qualify.

Whether we qualify or not, it was a wonderful experience for all of our team members to swim at such a high profile Hampshire County event and we are very proud of them for representing BWJS so incredibly well.

Thanks must go to all the parents who kindly transported the team to Fleet and for their support and particularly to Mrs Loosemoore for her wonderful help on poolside.

Mrs Cooper
