Friday 22nd January 2016 – Quiz Club Area Heats

Filed under: Whole School @ 4:16 pm

On Friday two teams from BWJS attended the area heats for the Quiz Club General Knowledge National Championships. The pupils were chosen after completing a general knowledge quiz in their classes and each team was made up of one pupil from each year group. The teams were:

Team A:

Toby G (y6), William P (y5), Devon C (y4) and Annie C (y3)

Team B:

George O (y6), Fern M (y5), Martha T (y4) and Devon A (y3)

The area heats were held in Chandler’s Ford where our teams played against 10 other teams from 5 different schools. The quiz was made up of two rounds; the main round of 30 questions and then a final round with 10 high-scoring questions. The value of the questions ranged from 20 to 100 points, depending on difficulty.

Here is a sample of some of the questions that the pupils faced; some of them were pretty challenging!

(48 x 2) + 37 – 15

What unit of currency is used in Austria?

Who is credited with inventing dynamite in 1867?

Which is the oldest inhabited castle in the world?

Who composed the theme music for Star Wars?

Which is the highest mountain in Europe?

Our two teams put up a really good fight and used some great tactics to score as many points as possible. It was a very exciting quiz for the teams and supporters alike as the lead was constantly changing!

The final result for our teams was:

Team A – 1155

Team B – 985

Unfortunately these scores were not high enough to beat the winning team, who will be going through to the next round, but all the pupils from BWJS represented the school very well and enjoyed taking part in the event. Many thanks to the parents who were able to come and support the teams too.
