Friday 12th June 2015 – Winchester Schools Gala

This event, which has been organised by the Winchester Penguins Swimming Club every year for the last fifteen years, is always an important date in our competition diary. Entry is very limited to one boys’ and one girls’ freestyle and medley relay team as there is a huge entry of twenty six school swimming teams from all over Hampshire in each event. There is also a 25m freestyle swim for up to four year 4 children from each school but this unfortunately clashed with the Y4 visit to Stubbington so we only had two entries.

All the events are run in heats and the six school teams with the fastest times are then invited to swim in the finals. As you can imagine, the suspense is huge while waiting to find out whether our times will be fast enough and we were thrilled to find that all four of our teams had qualified as had both of our year 4 swimmers.

In the finals, both of our year 4 swimmers came in 6th place in races that were all so close together. Our girls’ teams were against very tough opposition from St Swithun’s and Hawley Place amongst other very good school teams but we put in an incredible time in the freestyle relay to take 4th place and 6th place in the medley relay. Our boys’ teams were dominant throughout and completely overwhelmed the opposing teams in the finals to take the trophies with first place in both the medley and freestyle relays.
Well done to all our swimmers, you were brilliant!

Mrs Cooper
