Friday 11th July – A Very Successful Year For BW Junior School Swimming

At 7.45am on Wednesday and Thursday mornings throughout the year, fit and eager swimmers converge on our pool ready for their swim squad training sessions. There is no automatic entry into our squads, children have to pass a trial before being accepted and often do not get offered a place on their first attempt. However, perseverance and determination to improve soon earns them another trial and hopefully a place in the squad.

Both the Upper school and Lower school swim squads have had a very successful year of competition; our girls’ medley and freestyle teams were fourth in the Hampshire round of the English Primary Schools Championships and our boys teams were second and third which qualified them to swim in the S.E. England Regional finals at Guildford where they finished 9th and 11th of twenty-five county winning teams from as far away as Kent!.

At the Winchester schools gala, our girls’ teams took 1st place in the finals of the medley relay and 2nd place to St Swithun’s School in the freestyle and the boys were also in medal places, coming 2nd to The Pilgrims’ School.in the freestyle and third in the medley. Two of our year 4 swimmers also got into the final of the 25m freestyle sprint. At the Hamble District gala two upper school teams took 1st and 2nd place and our Lower school squads took 1st and 2nd places in the Hamble AquaSplash gala. Our winning team from this event then qualified to represent the Eastleigh and Hamble district in the Hampshire Games at Aldershot Garrison Pool. This was such an exciting day which started with over 2,200 children from many sports gathering at the athletics stadium for an Olympic style parade with bands and banner waving. We were proud to walk under our own school banner and even more proud when we took the gold medal place in the pool, winning by a wide margin.

Our competitions ended with our last gala held in our own pool at the end of June against The Grey House School, Hartney Whitney. This was such a super gala with a wonderful sporting atmosphere where we took an early lead and then held on to it with outstanding swimming from all our team and won by just seven points! A tea of scrumptious cakes followed ( with thanks to our parent supporters) which was a super way to end our swimming year.

With thanks to Nicki Cresswell for her swimming teaching support and to Kate Smith and Victoria Cameron, our parents who help in so many ways each week.
