Wednesday 15th January 2014 – RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch Survey

Filed under: Whole School @ 2:07 pm

Bishop’s Waltham Junior School children will be taking part in the 2014 RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch survey from Monday 3rd February-Friday 7th February.  This is the fourth year our school will be taking part in the world’s biggest wildlife survey.

To take part in the survey, we hoping to have forty children and two adults spending 45 minutes every lunchtime observing and counting all birds that we see in our school grounds.  By doing this we are contributing vital information that will help the RSPB discover how bird populations are doing in our area.  Our results will then be forwarded to the RSPB and this will give them an overview of which birds are making the most of our school grounds.  This builds up a snapshot of bird numbers across the UK and it also shows how birds are faring from area to area.   I am delighted to inform you that this year we are fortunate to have Martin Spears  joining us on Monday and Friday.  He is a representative of the RSPB and our school will benefit greatly from his expertise and guidance.  Along with resources, he will be bringing badges for the children to purchase for £1.00.

As part of our preparation for taking part in the survey we will be making bird feeders but we would welcome any donations of bird seed to encourage birds into the school grounds.  Please bring any donations into the school reception for my attention.  If you would like any further information please check out the RSPB website.

All children are welcome to join in the 2014  Big Schools’ Birdwatch survey. Please collect a form from the office if you would like to take part.
