Friday 6th July 2012 – Winchester Schools Gala

Our school swimming team put in amazing performances at the Winchester Schools’ Swimming gala at  the end of  June, even though we have only had a few weeks of squad training since our school swimming pool re-opened. Twenty-four teams from central Hampshire competed and amongst those were many of our old rivals including St Swithun’s School and Twyford Prep, ensuring that the standard of competition was going to be as high as ever!

Nerves jangled as each of our relay teams prepared for their first heat races; good times were essential to take us through to one of the six places in the finals. Good starts and take-overs without any disqualifications and amazing determination took all of our teams through and their final positions were 3rd place for the boys’ mixed stroke relay and 6th place in the freestyle while the girls were 4th in the freestyle and 5th in the mixed stroke relay.

At this gala, the Year 4 individual 25m freestyle sprint is always exciting and there were over 50 children taking part in each of the boys’ and girls’ events. We had four children competing and they all did us proud. Once again the heats were all timed to find the fastest six swimmers to compete in the final of the boys’ and girls’ events. Amy O’Loughnane just missed a place in the final and was placed overall 9th  but Alex Dodd, Ben Wainwright and Millie Smith all qualified for that coveted place in their final. Alex took 6th place and Ben was just beaten by a touch to take second place and take the silver medal. Millie thundered down her length and beat off all the opposition to take a convincing first place and the gold medal as the fastest Year 4 girl in the competition

What a win. What a team! Well done, we are all so proud of you.
