Friday 9th December 2011 – Greek Day in Year Five

Year Five finished their unit of work about Ancient Greece today with a day long event.  Despite the low temperatures, children arrived at school dressed in their finest Greek costume, all set for the day ahead.   They were joined by Mrs Peach, Mrs Brown, Mrs Mars, Mrs Barclay and Mr Sinclair.

The children were divided into five to represent five city states of Ancient Greece – Athens, Sparta, Argos, Corinth and Megara.  The children had to learn about the characteristics of each state, and how this would affect their attitude and behaviour throughout the day.

During the afternoon, the children competed in their own Ancient Greek olympic games.  They took part in foot racing, long jumping, javelin throwing, discuss throwing, throwing a ball into a basket and boxing – not boxing physically, but remembering items stored in a box.  Once the winners had been saluted, we returned to our classrooms to enjoy an Ancient Greek feast before heading home.
