Wednesday 8th June 2011 – Lower School Visit To Hillier’s Gardens

The rain just about held off all day for our much anticipated trip to Sir Harold Hillier’s Gardens in Ampfield today.  Just as well, as the whole time was spent outside in the great outdoors in this special location that houses species and shrubs from all around the world (a bit like a zoo really but for plants rather than animals!).  This was a great way to launch our topic ‘Through the Window’, the Science component of which involves learning about living things, habitats and food chains.  Much ‘hands on’ learning took place as the children touched and smelt plants, identified natural and unnatural objects in the environment, used light metres to measure light and observe plant habitats and hunted for mini-beasts.  Gingko class even came face to face with the tree that their classroom is named after and had the opportunity to pose for a class photo.  As usual, we were complemented on our excellent behaviour.  We would like to thank the friendly staff at the centre for running the activities and for answering the never-ending barrage of excited questions from the children.  I hope the following photo-slideshow gives a good insight into our experience.

  1. I remember going to Hillier’s, it was really fun and I remember one of the white trunked tree’s feeling very mysterious.
