Friday 1st April 2011 – Sporting fun in the Lower School

Although Wednesday’s Intra-Sports Competition sadly had to be postponed due to rain, the Lower School have still been able to celebrate their participation in several key sporting events in the last few weeks.

First off was the Year 3 Swimming Gala, held on 9th March.  For most of the children, this was their first ‘public’ swimming event and they entered the pool building with a mixture of nerves and excitement building.  Each and every child really tried their best in their races and all the teaching staff were very proud of them.  The winning team this time was the Leopards.

Next up, on Thursday last week, twenty-one lucky Year 3’s had the opportunity to take part in the Tag Rugby Festival held at Swanmore College of Technology.  There, Year 3’s and 4’s from all the schools in the local pyramid were coached in tag rugby skills by some older pupils from the secondary school.  Mrs Harris and I accompanied the children and were so proud of their impeccable behaviour – they really were a credit to BWJS.

Once again, each and every participant gave 100% to the task in hand, watching and listening carefully to teaching demonstrations and persevering in order to improve their throwing, catching and agility.  In the second half of the morning, they were organised into mini games playing against other schools.  They understood that winning wasn’t the most important thing and many of the children were keen to tell me on the return journey what they had learnt and how much fun they had had.   They really deserved the certificates of achievement they received in today’s celebration assembly.

Finally, on Wednesday, it was the turn of the Year 4 children to have their swimming gala.  The results were tight all through as the children really gave it their all.  In the end, the Tigers came up trumps and came 1st

Thank you to Mrs Cooper for organising the galas, Mr Broadway (Swanmore) and Miss Pearmain for co-ordinating the rugby and to all the children for being such good sports.
