Monday 21st March 2011 – Lower School Maths Workshop

Today, another successful Maths workshop for parents and Lower School pupils was run by Mrs Milne.  This time, the focus was on the use of informal jottings and the number line for multiplication and division.  Particular attention was paid to the importance of contextualising multiplication and division problems, so that children can really picture what is happening as they calculate.

The workshop was very well attended by over 20 parents/grandparents and their charges, so thank you very much to all who came on such a beautiful sunny afternoon!  It is great to know that we have so much support from families in our mission to help children to develop confidence in their numeracy skills.

If you were unable to attend this workshop, an annotated version of the electronic flipchart used on the day is available to view here.  It is a highly recommended read, giving a real insight into the strategies your children are being taught at school.  Children are easily confused when being introduced to different ways of calculating (e.g. the way ‘you’ were taught!!) and hopefully this presentation shows how we gradually build up to more formal methods, ensuring a full understanding of reasons for processes!
