Tuesday 8th March 2011 – Year Five visit Marwell

Previous years have seen rain, sub-zero temperaures, and cancellations due to heavy snow.  So as you can imagine, the Year Five team were delighted with the weather on our trip to Marwell this year.  Even coats seemed unnecessary at points in the day – though no members of staff were quite as brave as the one person in the year group to come wearing shorts!

Due, perhaps, to overexcitement, Year Five arrived at Marwell comfortably before opening time, so our day began with a short wait at the entrance gates.  Once the zoo was open, we made our way to the education centre for the true beginning of the day.  Inside, each class spent a little under an hour thinking about the way animals adapt to their habitats.  Children had the chance to interact with giant stick insects and gecko lizards, and a chance to closely examine animal goods seized by the police – big cat furs from various places around the world, a stuffed crocodile, and a preserved sea turtle.

After the talk, the two classes separated for their walks around the zoo.  Most of the animals were out on show throughout the day – they were obviously enjoying the sunshine as well.  Particular highlights included the giraffe that leaned forward to be stroked, genuine interaction between two tigers, and the snow leopard snoozing up against the glass wall of its enclosure, allowing us to be just centimetres away from him.

Here are some photos of the day.  Back in school, we will be writing our own recounts of our trip over the next week and a half, so come back soon to read more about our day.

Finally, a big thank you to the adults who joined us on our trip – your help was most appreciated!

  1. I’m glad you all had a really good visit to Marwell Zoo. I’ll be interested to see how much information you have retained about adaptation – as I beleive you will be covering this in Science.

On a different note – My wife and I have just bought a yearly pass for Marwell and are looking foward to taking our daughter there on many trips. Which parts of the zoo would you recommend?
